Create a data plan

To make sure you collect the data you need – you need to have a plan. A good data collection plan will outline:

Who will collect data?
What data will they collect?
Where will they collect the data? (and when?)
How will they collect the data?

Use video to count complete learning trials (Am I doing it?)

Videotape yourself implementing learning trials for one child in your classroom. Review your video and summarize:

The number of learning trials you planned to implement
The number of learning trials you actually implemented
How each component of each learning trial was implemented
The number of learning trials that were complete or correct learning trials

Match the data collection tool to the learning target behavior (Is it working?)

Choose one priority learning target for one child in your classroom. Decide which type of data to collect to monitor progress toward this priority learning target (e.g., frequency, accuracy, latency). Think about the nature of behavior and what you want to know about the child’s ability with it. Use one of the forms above or create your own form and work with your team to collect data on the child’s progress toward the priority learning target.

Tips from Teachers

I love the activity matrix. I use that as a data collection tool. I mean, I make one for all the areas in the room and I use it that way.

I look back at the other [data collection] tools that we have had in the past and I think this is the most realistic and the most worth our while, because it’s simple. This is so tailored towards the children.

The videotaping myself was really helpful, because then I could look at it and take that role of being in outside or looking in kind of thing. Seeing what I actually did rather than what I thought I did. So that was helpful.

I think for me and I’m still investigating the data tracking, the different ways to data track and looking at those, playing with those, trying to figure out what would make sense, because I’m very visual. It's good that you have more than one form, so there are different ways that you could look at that and you can see what might work best for you.
