Now that we have had an opportunity to review key aspects of writing priority learning targets and to discuss the Tips for Quality PLTs, consider if you need to revise any of the behavior statements for the target children you have identified.
- Read the target skills/behaviors you wrote on your PLT request form in coaching Session 1.
- Consider if your target skills/behaviors follow all the Tips for Quality PLTs.
- If not, you can use the Priority Learning Target Checklist handout or from your workbook to revise the behavior statement.
Check out the following pages of your Practice Guide for more information about identifying target skills or behaviors (pages 26-27) and selecting PLT behaviors that meet the quality indicators (pages 32-36).
Once you have identified a high-quality target skill or behavior statement you are ready to consider how you will teach the skill, where you will teach the skill, and how you will know the child is ready for something new. Use the handout provided to write out the parts of the PLT. You might use colored pencils for this activity to keep track of the different parts.
- The behavior or what the child is expected to do or say comes first. Write this inside the green box.
- Next, identify the conditions or the people, materials, or supports you expect the child needs to do the behavior. Write this inside the blue box.
- Then, think about the activities or when or where you want the child to use the behavior. Write this inside the orange box
- Finally, consider the criterion or the level of performance the child is expected to do the behavior. It often includes how much, how often, and for how long the child will need to do the behavior. The criterion is how you will know the child is ready for something new. Write this inside the red box
